Wayne Mark Rooney is an English footballer. He plays as a striker for Manchester United, a Premier League club, and the England national team.

He was born 24 October 1985 at Croxteth, a suburb of Liverpool, Merseyside, England. His parents, Thomas Wayne and Jeanette Marie Rooney, are from Irish descent. Rooney and his younger brothers (Graeme and John) was brought up Catholic in Croxteth.

Wayne Rooney joined Everton youth club since he was 9 years old, and made his professional debut in 2002. But he just spent two years in this club before moving to Manchester United in the 2004 when he was 18 years old. United actually got a hard competition from Newcastle United that bid £ 20 million for Rooney. But Manchester United has won the bidding war with a bid of £ 25.6 million. This is the highest fee ever paid for a player who is still under 20.

Rooney has brought United won the Premier League four times, the 2007–08 UEFA Champions League and two League Cups. Also holds two runner-up medals from both the Premier League and the Champions League. In August of the 2011–12 season Rooney scored his 150th goal, becoming United's highest goalscorer since the start of the Premier League.

Wayne Rooney made his senior international debut with England national club in 2003. He played at UEFA Euro 2004 and scored four goals, briefly becoming the competition's youngest goalscorer. He is regularly selected for the England squad, including at the 2006 and 2010 World Cups.

Rooney has won the England Player of the Year award twice, in 2008 and 2009. As of September 2011, he has won 72 international caps and scored 28 goals.

In 2011 he is listed as the third highest-paid footballer in the world after Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, with an annual income of €20.7m (£18m) including sponsorship contracts.

First used the number 8 shirt Rooney made his United debut on 28 September in a 6–2 home win over Fenerbahce in the Champions League. He was even able to score a hat-trick. These goals made Rooney the youngest player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League aged 18 years 335 days. Though, his first season with Manchester United ended without winning a trophy. His club is only able to finish in third place in the league and unable to advance to the round of eight of the Champions League.

Rooney first trophy with Manchester United came in the 2006 League Cup, and he was also named man of the match after scoring twice in United's 4–0 win over Wigan Athletic in the final. And Rooney won his first Premier League title at the end of the 2006–07 season. Rooney, who then use the number 10 shirt last worn by Ruud van Nistelrooy, then successfully bringing United retain the Premier League trophy in the next two seasons (2007-2008 and 2008-2009). In 2007-2008 United also win the Champions League after they defeated league rivals Chelsea in the final. In the 2010-11 United won again the Premier League.*
